ENUGU State Command of the Nigerian Immigration Service has arrested 27 illegal immigrants, but lamented lack of funds to repatriate them to their countries. Deputy Comptroller in the command in charge of Intelligence, Investigations and Enforcement, Mr. Obetta Asogwa, while parading the illegal aliens mainly from Niger Republic, said they were arrested following massive raids carried out in Udenu and Nsukka local government areas of the state!
“One of the cardinal objectives of the Comptroller General of Immigration is to have a robust internal monitoring and control of foreigners living in our midst. He said: “It has become imperative to carry out these raids following the security challenges we find ourselves in.
“Many of such people are in the state because our big men use them as cheap labour. But we were able to get these today.”
The immigration boss noted that the command was fully determined to rid the country of such people, adding that the strategy put in place by the Comptroller General was designed to help them work underground.
He said: “We have immigration attachés in all the 774 local government areas of the federation to maintain robust immigration presence in the rural areas so there is no hiding place.”
While lamenting that the command did not have the funds needed to repatriate all the illegal immigrants, Asogwa said only 16 of the 27 of the arrested irregular immigrants would immediately be sent back to their country.
He added: “The remaining 11 will be technically discharged as we do not have the capacity to send them back along with their brothers.
“They are all supposed to go back to their country or they will continue to cause problems.”
